Match Result – Colchester (U17s) 17 SC Torpedoes (U17S) 13

July 1, 2013 by Bryan Johnson

A SC Torpedoes U17s Team took the short journey down the A12  to Colchester Leisure World on Sun 30th June to play their Eastern Water Polo League Match against a Colchester U17s side.

I like away matches, because they do allow me to spectate as parent not worrying about keeping score/timing. So Sunday’s U17s Boys trip to Colchester was a treat for me and was I was duly rewarded with an entertaining and competitive match.

A few of the regular U17s were not available on this occasion so a first competitive match for SCT at this level for three players that normally play U15s  – Rufus, James and Rob J (hence why you get my 1st U17s match report).

The Colchester team was mostly made of boys at the higher end of the age group and a couple of their forwards Hat Nos 3 & 4 were described as ‘body builders’ by Simon . I have to agree with him on that one.

From the start Colchester used their strength to take an early 2 goal lead, Robert A then halved the lead with the Torpedoes first goal on the night, this was then followed by a period where each side traded goals as they settled into the match. Robert A added to his tally and Caspar opened his account the quarter ending with the Torpedoes only one behind 4-3.

Change of ends and off we go again, Simon opens the scoring with the first of his two goals in this quarter to level it at 4 all.  Colchester then hit the Torpedoes with  two on the trot restoring the two goal cushion at 6-4. SCT rally, goals from Simon and Caspar bring the scores level again!.  Just before the half time whistle Colchester No4 (body builder) powers through and scores to gives Colchester their slender one goal lead again at the break.

So third quarter, both teams line up for what tuned out to be the most exciting quarter of the match, nine goals in total! Some excellent passing, strong defending, quick counter attacks from both sides. I do not know how the boys kept it up.

Colchester scored first taking it to 8-6, then goals from Caspar and James levelled things again at 8 all. Tense stuff indeed!

Two more from Colchester, another from Caspar to keept us to within one goal, another from Colchester – two goal lead restored, one  from Rob J, only one goal in it yet again.

Final action of this period , the other ‘body builder’ No3 breaches our defence then scores the last goal of quarter.  So at the end of third Colchester lead 12-10.

So into the final quarter, still in the match – only two goals behind! Could SCT do it pinch a win?. It had been a tight match and very compelling up until that point – Come on Torpedoes!

Alas it was not to be Colchester appeared to have more stamina (they did have more subs) and the two ‘body builders’ began to use their physical advantage to keep procession and exploit the tiredness in our players.  Goals in this quarter from Simon, James and Caspar and the defensive heroics of whole team (Ben in goal putting everything on the line, including his face a couple of times) gave us hope but on the night Colchester were just too strong winning 17-13.

So well done to U17s, whilst not a victory it was an excellent performance and I hope the players enjoyed playing the match as much as I enjoyed watching it. So that’s it for our u17s competitive games until Sept so enjoy your summer!

SC Torpedoes U17s Team

Goal scorers:- Caspar Church – 5, Simon Kirby – 3 , Robert Attwater   – 2, James Leney – 2, Robert Johnson – 1

U13s Tournament – “The Fantastic Four”

June 28, 2013 by Bryan Johnson

No not the Marvel comic book superhero’s but rather the story of how four of our players contributed to a team bearing the SC Torpedoes name securing it’s 1sttrophy.

SCT Torpedoes Players with the EWPL U13 Runner Up Trophy. Left to right : Sophie Johnson, Felix Church, Billy Vale, Erin Scarce

The SC Torpedoes had planned to enter an U13s team in a 5 team tournament hosted by Ipswich at Crown pools.  Whilst sorting out the teams last week we were struggling to get a full side to compete due to larger number of players than anticipated having other commitments. So the committee made the hard choice to withdraw from the ournament.

It appeared that we were not the only team struggling and two other teams also withdrew. The organisers could not cancel the pool booking so late on Thursday the suggestion was to offer this as an informal session with all teams bringing as many players  as possible, they would be mixed up and play in a fun tournament.

We made this option available to our players if they wanted to still play polo we would take them down.  Felix Church, Billy Vale, Erin Scarce, and Sophie Johnson decided to give it a go.

As we arrived at Crown Pools on Saturday night things took an unexpected twist –it appeared that the 4 players (three inters and 1 diddy) were expected to play as the SC Torpedoes team borrowing players form other sides. I had only expected to chaperone our players not organise our players and others poolside. GULP!

I have to apologise as was not able to keep score or record who scored, I was a bit busy!.

What I can remember is

SCT vrs Bishop Storford – narrow defeat

SCT vrs Ipswich  –  a win

SCT vrs Colchester – another win!.

The thing that stuck out for me is that the players in the water did not care what badge/name was on their trunks/club t shirts. When they were in the water their team mates were the players wearing the same colour hat as them and they wanted to beat the team that was wearing the other colour.

Another thing I remember one is Billy Vale’s laugh when he diverted a goal bound shot to the side of the post which landed with huge splash soaking me. It must be something in the Vale genes – in goal Billy was making amazing saves that we are more used to seeing his sister Pheobe making.

So played three – won two – I had no idea what had happened on the other matches so the surprise for the 4 players and myself was at the end  that SC Torpedoes would be presented a trophy for being runner up on the night.

Although the event was not without it’s hiccups, on the night those that were there enjoyed some frenetic polo matches and all the players had smiles on their faces.  We do need to encourage and support this type of event because with new players in both Inter and Diddy squads the number of players in this age group is growing so next time we can field stronger sides.

So well done to our “fantastic four”

Match Result – SC Torpedoes U15s 6 Colchester U15s 7

June 12, 2013 by Bryan Johnson

Our U15s Mixed squad played our  home Eastern Water Polo League match against a Colchester U15s team fixture last Friday 7th of June. It was very physical match with personal tussles between our players and Colchester all throughout the game and as ever some heroic goal keeping by Pheobe. But unfortunately Colchester edged the win by one goal. (or gifted  you decide)

SC Torpedoes U15s 10 – Paddock Piranahs U15s 4

May 21, 2013 by Bryan Johnson

Last night our Under 15s played their Eastern Waterpolo League away match against the Paddock Piranahs u15s at Bishops Storford. I would like to congratulate all of players who secured a 10-4 victory.
Piranahs took an early lead in the 1st quarter going 1-0 up, then SC torpedoes pulled one back
with Conall scoring the first of his six goals. The first quarter finished 1-1.
Into the 2nd quarter with three more goals from Conall with only one in reply from the Piranahs saw the Torpedoes have a 4-2 lead at half time.
Then Conall continued to lead the way in the third quarter scoring two more making his total for the match six, before the other players began to find the back of the net. … [Read More]
